Monkwearmouth Development Ltd (MDL), a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Argon Property Development Solutions, has been awarded the contract to deliver a new entrance and office building at Monkwearmouth Hospital in Sunderland.
Sir Robert McAlpine will be carrying out the construction of a 3,237sq m, three-storey building, with work scheduled to be completed in January 2024.
MDL is working with NTW Solutions, a limited company established by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, to provide premises that will enable NTW Solutions to deliver improved facilities and a range of important new services for the trust, which is one of the largest mental health and disability operators in England.
Just a stone’s throw from the city centre, the building will provide a welcoming front entrance to the main outpatient facilities on the existing hospital site.
In addition to the new entrance, reception area, and public café, the new accommodation will include flexible open-plan workspaces and breakout areas, with consultants’ admin offices on upper floors.
The building will also comprise a new administration hub and crisis call services for the hospital, as well as a community café for staff and visitors.
In addition to a replacement tree-lined staff carpark, the development proposals also include level access and a landscaped piazza area and memorial garden; transforming the existing parking area that fronts onto Newcastle Road.
We’re delighted to be delivering state-of-the-art spaces and facilities for the NHS to support its work in providing key mental health services to the communities in the north of England
The hospital’s new front door will create far better connectivity within the estate for hospital users and visitors.
MDL was appointed through Pagabo’s developer-led framework, a nationwide procurement framework available for public sector organisations that focuses on delivering social value for each development.
Paul McCabe, director of estates and facilities at NTW Solutions, said: “We are proud to be part of this development, which is seeing much-needed investment in the Monkwearmouth Hospital site and will bring real benefits to service users, staff and visitors.”
David Peck from Monkwearmouth Development, added: “We’re delighted to be delivering state-of-the-art spaces and facilities for the NHS to support its work in providing key mental health services to the communities in the north of England.”
And Richard Wilks from Argon Property Development Solutions said: “Having worked with the trust and NTW Solutions for a number of years we are pleased to be playing such a large part in bringing their requirements to fruition, and look forward to delivering something that will make a positive difference to the patients, staff, visitors, and the general public; particularly at a time when mental health services are at the forefront of society’s needs.”
